Everything You Need to Know About Your Foot Health & Our Podiatry Services

Q: Don’t Podiatrists just cut toenails?

A: No! We are health professionals who are able to treat and assess a variety of foot and lower limb conditions. The complex mechanics of feet (52 bones, a network of muscles, joints and ligaments) and a wide range of foot problems (over 200 identified conditions) demand professional expertise.

A: Generally, no*. Podiatrists are health professionals in their own right and are qualified to diagnose all conditions related to the lower limbs.

*However, you will need a referral if you are:
  • A Department of Veterans’ Affairs gold card holder
  • Covered by Workers Compensation, or
  • In Medicare’s Enhanced Primary Care program.

For further information, please contact our Clinic.

A: Please remember to bring any recent X-rays or scans you may have that relate to your complaint. If you have been recommended to see us by another health professional, any paperwork or letters from the referring practitioner relating to your complaint will help with your consultation. Ideally, you should wear clothing you are comfortable in and that will allow your Podiatrist to easily assess your legs and feet.

A: Yes, please contact our Clinic to make a time.

A: If you are in the top level of your health fund, you should be covered. If you are unsure, please check with your fund. We are equipped with the HICAPS eftpos terminal for instant health fund payment, so if you bring your card you will only have to pay the gap.

A: Yes, your Podiatrist is fully conversant with how infections and pain develop, and can treat all nail pathologies.

A: While the off-the-shelf orthotics are cost-effective, they are not designed with YOU in mind. Customised orthotics are designed to support, align and improve the function of the foot and lower limb. Private health rebates are provided by some health funds to contribute towards the cost of custom orthotics. Contact your health fund directly if you wish to know if you are covered.

A: Yes! Common reasons for a child needing to see a Podiatrist include flat feet, toe walking, warts, ingrown toenails, heel pain and footwear advice.

A: A Podiatrist will be able to assess changes to nerves and circulation in the feet, which may be a warning sign for other diabetes complications.

A: Yes, your Podiatrist is fully qualified in medical techniques to bring short-term improvement. This includes strapping, ice treatment, ultrasound and other rehabilitation exercises. Furthermore they will be able to determine the underlying reason for the initial injury, and organise a treatment regime to prevent reoccurrence.

A: Yes, shin splints are caused by an over pronatory mid-foot. This can be treated through stretching and strapping, and if the problem persists, the use of corrective orthotics can be considered.

A: Other problem areas we can treat include knee, hip and lower back pain.
